Even the walk to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market feels a little different. The market sits in the middle of the Höllental valley, directly beneath the imposing railway viaduct, surrounded by forest, rock and darkness. As evening arrives and the arches are illuminated, the atmosphere changes completely. Between small stalls, warm light and steam in the cold air, the market feels like a small world of its own. I was there with my camera, looking less for the perfect Christmas-market image than for the moments in between: light on faces, hands around warm cups, people below the great stone arches and that particular mixture of bustle and Black Forest calm.
Beneath the viaduct
The market is held at Hofgut Sternen in Breitnau, in the middle of the Höllental valley. Directly above the stalls runs the roughly 40-metre-high Höllental railway viaduct. That setting is what makes the place so distinctive. In daylight, the scale of the structure is the first thing you notice. As it gets darker, the light takes over: the arches glow, the forest slowly disappears into the background and the small market stalls suddenly look almost tiny beneath it.
Photographically, that contrast was what interested me: cool, large-scale architecture above the warm light of the stalls. Then there are the smaller scenes you only notice when you are not simply moving from stall to stall.

Book tickets early
For the 2026 edition, the market runs from 26 November to 20 December, Thursday through Sunday. Advance sales begin on 14 October at 10:00. Entry is only possible with an online ticket booked in advance for a specific time slot.[1] [2]
My advice is not to add too much around the visit. Time on the market is limited, but that is exactly why it is worth not filling the evening with several other fixed plans. If you mainly come for atmosphere and photographs, choose a later slot. As darkness falls, the light beneath the viaduct, the illuminated stalls and the steam in the cold air become much more intense.
- Save your ticket on your phone or as a screenshot because reception in the valley can be unreliable.
- If you are driving, plan your parking together with the visit in advance.
- Warm shoes with a reliable grip are definitely the better idea in winter.
A more relaxed arrival by shuttle
Official shuttles run from Titisee, Hinterzarten and Himmelreich, among other places. There is also a Freiburg connection with a reserved seat. Depending on the ticket, shuttle travel and entry are combined. If you drive yourself, parking and entry should both be booked in advance. Availability directly at the market is limited.[1] [2]
When timing allows, I would choose the train-and-shuttle combination. It makes the start of the visit much more relaxed and avoids a second round of parking logistics afterwards. Titisee also works well if you want to add a walk by the lake or an overnight stay to the trip.
What makes the evening special
Ravenna Gorge is not a Christmas market to rush through. Precisely because the site is compact, it is worth moving through it more slowly. A warm cup in your hand, then another look up to the viaduct. Light between the trees, a small timber hut, then darkness again. For me, that changing rhythm is the real appeal.
Perhaps that is also why the place is so interesting to photograph: not only because of the grand setting, but because of the many smaller situations in between. If you are looking for a Christmas market in Advent that genuinely feels like the Black Forest, Ravenna Gorge is a special excursion.
